SMCC Racing visits Aston University

Recently, several students from St Mary's Catholic College Racing Team (SMCC Racing enjoyed an amazing opportunity to visit Aston University in Birmingham. During this trip, they took part in a range of activities, including testing their cars for the regional finals in January. They even came first and had the fastest car last year!
When the St Mary’s pupils arrived at Aston University, the workshop staff had already prepared the standard 23-metre racing track for them. This excited bunch of Year 9 and 10 students, who’d been toiling away on their cars for ages, couldn’t wait to get started! While the cars themselves were pre-made, the team set about finalising them, adding that all-important final touch. This involved drilling a hole in the front wing for secure gluing using an activating spray. Wheels were glued on, axles trimmed to size, and then it was time for the exciting part – experimentation! With each team having a different car model, this was a fantastic opportunity to explore speed and performance, gaining valuable insights along the way. As the students sent their cars zipping down the track, the speed was automatically recorded – adding to the thrill of the race!
Our visit to Aston University included a fascinating tour by one of their staff members. This was incredibly helpful in understanding the wide range of courses and opportunities they offer. They have courses in electronics, engineering, coding, design, biomedical engineering, forensic engineering, 3D printing, and even experimental laboratories! Aston University doesn’t just offer diverse courses, it opens doors to global experiences too. Some courses, like the one where you build your own racing car, can even take you around the world! This hands-on learning approach was particularly interesting to the pupils, as many are passionate about Formula One and racing in general.
Aston University houses an amazing course called Formula Student. It’s a unique opportunity for a group of students taking the same course to come together and build a racing car from scratch, starting in October and finishing by June. Everything from the chassis to the control systems – they do it all themselves! Once June arrives, their creations hit the track at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, the iconic home of the British Grand Prix. What’s even more exciting is that any team member with a clean driving licence can take the wheel during the races. Talk about putting theory into practice!
The final activity that the students took part in, was with the wind tunnel. Smoke is sucked through a smaller chamber and across the car to show the aredynamicsof the car as it battled against the wind. The data will help to improve the cars’ performance through it’s design. It is fascinating when you realise and understand what could be holding the cars back from gaining top speed. Next stop: The North West Regional Finals on January 30th 2024.
